Fiona Macleod

Fiona Macleod is an environmental writer for the Mail & Guardian newspaper and editor of the M&G Greening the Future and Investing in the Future supplements.

She is also editor of Lowveld Living magazine in Mpumalanga.

An award-winning journalist, she was previously environmental editor of the M&G for 10 years and was awarded the Nick Steele award for environmental conservation.

She is a former editor of Earthyear magazine, chief sub-editor and assistant editor of the M&G, editor-in-chief of HomeGrown magazines, managing editor of True Love and production editor of The Executive.

She served terms on the judging panels of the SANParks Kudu Awards and The Green Trust Awards. She also worked as a freelance writer, editor and producer of several books, including Your Guide to Green Living, A Social Contract: The Way Forward and Fighting for Justice.

Kruger head to move on

The director of the Kruger National Park, David Mabunda, is tipped to become the new head of South African National Parks (SANParks). He will take over as CEO of the country’s 20 national parks from Mavuso Msimang, who has moved on to head the State Information Technology Agency.

Casualties of a cruel trade

Conservation officials and police have joined forces to bust open a huge smuggling network involved in cruel, illicit trade in endangered wildlife. In the past month the network has been responsible for smuggling at least 13 leopards — animals that are ranked in the highest category of threatened species.

Hunt is off in Kruger

South Africa’s premier community conservation project, the Makuleke Communal Property Association, has rejected commercial hunting in favour of ecotourism to raise revenues. The new ecotourism deal will put an end to hunting in the national park.
