Kurt Waldheim, the former United Nations secretary general and president of Austria whose reputation was tarnished by revelations over his Nazi past, died on June 14 at the age of 88, his family said. The former statesman suffered a heart attack in May and had been ailing ever since.

Bottled water consumption, which has more than doubled globally in the last six years, is a natural resource that is heavily taxing the world’s ecosystem, according to a new United States study. The study says that although bottled water is often no healthier than tap water, it can end up costing 10 000 times more.
The pace of China’s economic growth poses a dire threat for the planet unless Beijing and other industrial countries change their outdated model of production and consumption, an environmental activist warned. ”Our global civilisation today is on an economic path that is environmentally unsustainable,” said Lester Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute.
