I have a good dose of melanin, making me one of the darker people prowling the streets of Johannesburg. I was born and brought up in Kenya. I carry a Kenyan passport and have official recognition as a Kenyan citizen. I can vote, run for political office and join the Kenyan army — if I want to. I love ugali, the Kenyan, harder version of pap.
Since opening an embassy in Khartoum in January 2004, South Africa’s involvement in Sudan has grown more visible. President Thabo Mbeki has a key role in the African Union-led Sudan peace process and Pretoria currently chairs the AU’s post-conflict reconstruction committee on Southern Sudan.

The resounding rejection by Kenyans of a draft constitution in a referendum backs President Mwai Kibaki into an awkward political corner and raises the spectre of a premature lame-duck presidency. Kibaki dangerously staked his credibility on the draft, which many Kenyans saw as perpetuating the post-colonial legacy of a strong presidency.
