Terrorism: The new scramble for Africa

The scramble for Africa has taken on new meaning with different terrorist groups wanting to get their hands on Africa’s resources for funding, and on its people for warfare, a conference on terrorism in Johannesburg heard on Wednesday. Somewhere between -million and -million worth of uncut gems are smuggled out of Sierra Leone each year.

M&G Oilgate team doubly awarded for reports

Mail & Guardian journalists Stefaans Brümmer and Sam Sole, together with former staffer Wisani wa ka Ngobeni, have jointly won the Media Institute of Southern Africa’s John Manyarara Investigative Journalism Award for 2006 for their reports on the Oilgate scandal. The team also won the category for print news at the regional Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2006 awards.

Marescia leads King’s women to Spain

The South African Hockey Association on Tuesday announced the Spar South African women’s hockey squad to participate in the 2006 Samsung Hockey World Cup, which takes place in Madrid, Spain, from September 27 to October 8. Marsha Marescia takes over the captain’s armband from recently retired Lindsey Carlisle.

Science: The cure for poverty

Without science and scientists, Africa is doomed to fail in the implementation of the eight Millennium Development Goals, Minister of Science and Technology Mosibudi Mangena said at a media briefing on Monday. He was discussing the role of science in helping South Africa deal with poverty, economic growth and sustainable development.

Air transport takes flight in economic growth

Air transport’s contribution to the South African tourism industry has helped tourism become the only sector that has grown in gross domestic product and in employment contribution to the economy, according to Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe. Speaking on Monday, Radebe said that air transport generates about 470 000 direct and indirect jobs across Africa.
