Venus Williams on Friday also pulled out of the French Open, resulting in the first Grand Slam tournament since 2003 without either Williams sister.
This is the first time the American sisters are seeded 1-2 at a major championship since the Australian Open in January 2003.

Venus Williams left the US Open the same way Serena Williams did, undone by all those big shots off the racket of little Justine Henin. Henin became only the second woman to beat both Williams sisters at the same Grand Slam tournament, reaching the final at Flushing Meadows with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory over Venus on Friday.

Svetlana Kuznetsova got off to a horrible start in her US Open semifinal on Friday. How horrible? Her opponent, Anna Chakvetadze, won the first set despite hitting only one winner. And then, slowly but surely, 2004 champion Kuznetsova began keeping the ball between the lines, and Chakvetadze began missing shots short, long and wide.
Venus Williams stood still, straight-faced and serious, during a TV interview right before she played in the French Open’s third round. Her opponent, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, giggled while delivering her sound bite. She then kept right on smiling — when she stepped on court, when she hit spectacular shots, and, widest of all, when she won.

Andre Agassi received another anti-inflammatory injection on Saturday and got an extra day to rest before playing in the third round of the United States Open, his match postponed because of intermittent rain. Matches involving Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova also were pushed back to Sunday.

Even as she approaches her 50th birthday and recovers from knee surgery, Martina Navratilova plans to play a full schedule of doubles tournaments in 2006, including the grand slams, and might take another stab at singles. ”I just feel like I’m not quite done yet,” Navratilova said on Thursday.
Mike Tyson is returning to the ring. The former heavyweight boxing champion will fight for the first time in nearly a year, facing journeyman Kevin McBride on June 11 at Washington’s MCI Centre, a boxing source told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Monday.
