Somali opposition figures to unite in Eritrea

Somali opposition leaders, including several senior Islamists, are to meet in Eritrea from Thursday to try to unite against the Ethiopian-backed government at talks intended to a rival a Mogadishu peace conference. Many Somali dissidents have already made their home in Eritrea, which has been accused by the United States and United Nations of sending arms to insurgents.

Exiled Somali MPs reject call for peace talks

Somali opposition politicians exiled in Eritrea dismissed calls on Thursday to attend a peace meeting in Mogadishu that is also being opened up to Islamists and even insurgents who have attacked the conference venue. Organisers appeared to be heeding donor calls for inclusiveness when they announced the move on Wednesday.

Eritrea urges Ugandan peacekeepers out of Somalia

Eritrea said on Tuesday it had urged Uganda to pull out of Somalia after taking the ”hasty step” of sending peacekeepers to the anarchic nation where the situation was deteriorating. Kampala is the only African nation so far contributing to an African Union mission in Somalia, where its 1 200 soldiers have come under attack from insurgents.

N Korea agrees to disarmament steps

North Korea agreed to take steps towards nuclear disarmament under a groundbreaking deal struck on Tuesday that will bring the impoverished communist state more than -million worth of aid. Under the agreement Pyongyang will freeze the reactor at the heart of its nuclear programme and allow international inspections of the site.

The rebel soldier sprawls on a rock, languidly pulls off his boots and reaches into a twine bag to grab a packet of biscuits. ”You’re just looking for war stories,” the 36-year-old Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebel says when I ask him where he got a dozen scars around his ankle. It’s true, I am, and he doesn’t take the bait.

Uganda ceasefire: Rebels seek more time

Surrounded by rebels in mismatched uniforms close to Sudan’s border with Uganda, a Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander said on Thursday his troops needed more time to assemble for a ceasefire. A truce deadline between Uganda and the LRA expired on Tuesday but fighters continue to stream into two designated assembly points in neighbouring south Sudan.
