Smith: ‘I love winning Tests’

South African captain Graeme Smith was delighted with his team’s four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third Castle Lager Test at the Wanderers on Sunday, but cautioned that South Africa still had work to do. South Africa wrapped up the win an hour after tea on the third day, with Shaun Pollock hitting the winning runs.

Australia outspend SA when it comes to athletes

South African Sports Commission and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) president Moss Mashishi conceded on Monday that South Africa does not have anywhere near the level of cash resources injected into sport by the Australians. ”Between the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and the 2004 Athens Olympics, Australia invested Aus-million [R3,6-billion] in their athletes.”

South Africa needs to ask itself whether it is investing sufficiently in the country’s athletes. This is the question posed by South African Sports Commission and Olympic Committee President Moss Mashishi when a large contingent of the SA Commonwealth Games team arrived back from Melbourne on Sunday evening.

Ernie Els back on top

In only his second tournament following a five-month injury break, Ernie Els returned to the winner’s enclosure at the Dunhill Championship on Sunday. Els may have coughed and spluttered through the early rounds at the par-72 Leopard Creek golf course this week, but class and experience told in the final round.

Fluish Bothma moves into Dunhill lead

He may have felt a little under the weather before the start of the tournament, but by the time Michiel Bothma completed his second round at the Dunhill Championship, any sense of affliction had dissipated. As second-round play got under way late on Friday, there were still 24 golfers out on the course when play was suspended.

Close field in Nedbank challenge

Predicting the winner of this year’s Nedbank Golf Challenge is about as tough as actually playing the par-72 Gary Player layout. ”The whole field is very close and all of the guys have proven themselves,” says three-time champion Ernie Els. Retief Goosen tops the bookmakers’ boards at 3-1, with Els on offer at 4-1.

First-timer hopes to win golf challenge

Only four first-timers have ever won the Nedbank Golf Challenge at their first attempt and the last time that was achieved was in 1986 by Mark McNulty. There are three newcomers this year — Argentinian Angel Cabrera, American Stewart Cink and Englishman Luke Donald — and it is the latter who believes he can break the mould this year.

High hopes for SA tennis team in Nice

South African coach Frans Cronje has little doubt that his team will be a force at the Nike Junior Tour International Masters tennis tournament to be played in Nice, France, from October 31 to November 5. Cronje will take charge of Grant Ive, Wesley Montgomery, Bianca Swanepoel and Kaylea Sher for the event that pits top junior players from 21 countries.

Hope for SA in Davis Cup

As expected, Moroccan Davis Cup captain Abdel-Rahim Moundir named a team without top players Younes El Aynaoui and Hicham Arazi for this weekend’s Euro/Africa zone group-one tie against South Africa, to be played at the Club Olympic de Tennis in Khemisset.

Els, Retief commit to SAA Open

Both Ernie Els and Retief Goosen have committed themselves to play at this year’s South African Airways Open which will take place at The Links at Fancourt in George from December 15 to 18. Knee surgery following an injury has kept Els out of action since July but he is hoping to be back in competition around the end of November and expects to be fully recovered in time for the Open.
