Going into the second week of the Maccabi Games in Tel Aviv, Israel, the South African delegation have already earned five gold medals, equalling the total won at the previous Games in 2001. In the triathlon event, South Africa ended up with two golds, one silver and a bronze.
World number one tennis player Roger Federer toured Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, visiting the Imbewu Community Volunteers, which he sponsors. This was the Swiss-based player’s first opportunity to meet the organisation’s workers, and many of the children he has sponsored for the past year.
Rik de Voest is only flying into South Africa on Tuesday but his late arrival is good news for captain Kevin Curren. De Voest will join Wayne Ferreira, Wesley Moodie and Jeff Coetzee for this weekend’s Euro/Africa zone group-one Davis Cup tie against Germany, to be played at the Standard Bank Arena.

A majestic course record 11-under-par 61 from Zimbabwean Marc Cayeux saw him run away with the season-ending Vodacom Tour Championship at the par-72 Country Club layout on Sunday. Going into the final round, a playoff looked the most likely scenario but Cayeux literally floored his opposition to end the tournament on 20-under par 268.

The Germans have named a formidable team for the upcoming Euro/Africa zone group-one Davis Cup tie against South Africa to be played at the Standard Bank Arena from March 4 to 6. German captain Patrik Kuhnen has world number 15 Tommy Haas, Nicolas Kiefer (30), Rainer Schuettler (40) and Alexander Waske, who is at 138.

The lead changed hands repeatedly on the final day of the Telkom PGA Championship at the Woodhill Golf Estate on Sunday but in the end it was Warren Abery who came home best of all to claim the spoils. The Mount Edgecombe Country Club professional rounded the course on Sunday on three-under-par 69.

Killarney professional Jaco van Zyl led the way after the opening round of the Telkom PGA Championships played at the par-72 Woodhill Country Club layout on Thursday. Despite the announcement that the course was playing tougher than ever, 66 golfers in the 156-man field shot below par with another 19 lying on level par.

A comment from the television commentators about Colin Montgomerie helped England’s Simon Wakefield to victory at the Dimension Data Pro-Am golf tournament at the par-72 Gary Player Country Club on Sunday. Wakefield signed for a three-under-par 69 on Sunday, to end the tournament on a nine-under total of 279.

South African Tim Clark took the lead at the third hole during the final round of the South African Airways Open golf tournament played the Durban Country Club on Sunday and never looked back. When the 29-year-old from Umkomaas potted the final putt of the tournament, he had completed the tournament in a 15-under-par 273.
