South Africa’s Western Stormers recorded their first win of the Super 14 when they downed the Waikato Chiefs 21-16 in Cape Town on Friday. The home side, who led 14-13 at the break, outscored their opponents two tries to one. While it was a scrappy encounter, the Stormers were much-improved from their first two outings.

Since day one the only thing that South Africa rugby coach Jake White has been focused on is the 2007 World Cup in France. He again stated so on Saturday when the Springboks beat England 25-14 at Twickenham. ”It’s the World Cup that we’ve been working towards and this victory [over England] has given us a major boost ahead of facing them in France,” said White.

Some will tell you he’ll burn out, others will say he was born to play Test rugby. But all that matters right now, and for the next 12 months ahead of the World Cup in France, is that Pierre Spies stays fit and gains as much experience as he can. The Boks are going to need him at the World Cup.

With a host of seasoned campaigners remaining at home, Springbok coach Jake White will be hoping to unearth new talent when his side takes on Ireland and England in Europe over the next month. The World Cup in France is just a year away, and White will experiment with four new caps and a number of new combinations on tour.
