Now is not the time to take hasty decisions that might be regretted later — that’s how Haroon Lorgat, convenor of selectors, responded on Thursday to South Africa’s disappointing exit from the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. South Africa lost by seven wickets to Australia in the semifinal in St Lucia on Wednesday after being bowled out for 149.
The Highveld Lions won the Standard Bank Pro20 competition in fine style on Friday night, beating the Cape Cobras by six wickets in the final at the Wanderers, thanks to a superb 73 by the Lions captain. Neil McKenzie won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat. The Cobras appeared to have lost some of their venom, and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Just hours after being presented with the International Cricket Council ODI Shield for being the world’s top one-day international team, the Proteas set off on Wednesday to take part in the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. Captain Graeme Smith said there will be 100% commitment from every member of the team.

Spurred by a partnership of 68 between Justin Ontong and Werner Coetsee, the Highveld Lions snatched a two-wicket victory over the Cape Cobras in their Standard Bank Pro20 match at the Wanderers on Friday night. The Cobras won the toss and batted first, putting on 181 runs.

Australia’s 10-wicket loss to New Zealand in the first of the three-match Chappell-Hadlee one-day international (ODI) series in Wellington on Friday is South Africa’s gain. South Africa are now joint leaders in the International Cricket Council ODI standings, on 128 points with Australia. If Australia lose another match in the series, South Africa will be stand-alone leaders.

There were no surprises when Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced an unchanged squad for the International Cricket Council Cricket World Cup in the West Indies next month. Making the announcement on Thursday evening, CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said South Africa was sending a strong, well-balanced and well-prepared team.

Veteran South African bowler Shaun Pollock, who has just joined the ranks of the all-time great all-rounders, said on Tuesday that a victory in the fifth MTN one-day international against Pakistan at the Wanderers on Wednesday will be a huge confidence booster for the team ahead of the Cricket World Cup, which begins in the West Indies in March.

South Africa needed just 65 minutes and 14 overs as they demolished Pakistan by 10 wickets in the fourth MTN one-day international at Newlands on Sunday. After winning the toss and sending Pakistan in to bat, the Proteas put on a superb bowling display to bowl Pakistan out for the paltry total of 107 in the 46th over of the innings.

Rain was the winner in the third MTN one-day international between South Africa and Pakistan at St George’s Park on Friday, when no play was possible in South Africa’s innings. Pakistan made 245 for eight in their rain-interrupted innings, but the sell-out crowd did not get to see whether South Africa would be able to chase down the runs.

Pakistan put in a superb performance on Wednesday night to beat South Africa by 141 runs in the second MTN one-day international at Kingsmead. South Africa, chasing a total of 352 for victory in front of a capacity crowd, were all out for 210 after 40 overs and one ball. Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and elected to bat first.
