It is unfortunate that there is not more time for South Africa to get used to conditions in India, but they will just have to use every opportunity to familiarise themselves with conditions there, former batting great Daryll Cullinan said on Thursday. ”I believe the team should do quite well in India,” he said.

South Africa took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match Standard Bank series against New Zealand with another thrilling victory at St George’s Park on Sunday. South Africa won the match by four wickets with four balls in hand. ”It was a very good game,” said South African captain Graeme Smith. ”I thought we fielded and bowled superbly, although we let it slip a bit in the last few overs.”

The Proteas set a new South African record of 11 consecutive one-day international victories when they beat New Zealand by 19 runs in a low-scoring but exciting match at Newlands on Friday. A sparkling innings of 73 by big-hitting Justin Kemp saw South Africa win the first Standard Bank one-day international against New Zealand by two wickets in Bloemfontein on Sunday, to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The nearly 7 000 fans were left on tenterhooks until the final over.

New Zealand won the first Standard Bank one-day international against South Africa A at Willowmoore Park on Friday, after rain and lightning stopped play after 43 overs. When the match was called off, South Africa A, chasing 273 for victory, had 199 for four. New Zealand won the match by 19 runs according to the Duckworth-Lewis formula.

New Zealand are very happy with the format of the 2005/2006 cricket series against South Africa, in which the tour is split in two, with a short one-day tour now and a three-Test series in April. ”It’s great for us, because it means we don’t have to adjust to a different form of the game in the middle of the tour,” said New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming.

The president of the South African Rugby Union, Brian van Rooyen, survived an eight-hour president’s council meeting on Friday, and remains at the helm of rugby in South Africa. Van Rooyen confirmed that the council agreed unanimously to accept the recommendations of the Brandt-Heunis report on the affairs of rugby.
South African Tennis Association chief executive Ian Smith was ecstatic on Monday about the success of two South African players — Wesley Moodie and Liezel Huber — at Wimbledon over the weekend, but he believes there could be more success for South Africa if tennis could attract a long-term sponsor.
