Zimbabwe’s convener of cricket selectors, Max Ebrahim, on Monday dismissed suggestions that Zimbabwe have no place in Test cricket. Speaking after Zimbabwe’s second-innings defeat by South Africa on Sunday, Ebrahim said there are many positives that can be taken from Zimbabwe’s performance, particularly from some of the younger players.
Twenty-seven-year-old Western Province-Border captain Ashwell Prince saw an opportunity and grabbed it with both hands on Saturday, on the second day of the second Castle Lager/MTN Test between South Africa and Zimbabwe at Supersport Park on Saturday. Prince scored an undefeated maiden Test century.
A haul of six wickets by Monde Zondeki saw South Africa to victory on the third day of the second Test match against Zimbabwe on Sunday. South Africa’s victory by an innings and 62 runs gave South Africa a two-nil series win. Although they were badly beaten, Zimbabwe showed a lot more resistance in the second Test, and can take heart from the performance of some of their players.
A smile spread across the face of South African captain Kevin Curren when the name of his number-one player, Wesley Moodie, was drawn first on Wednesday for the Euro-African zone group-one Davis Cup tie against Germany in Johannesburg. The tie will be played at the indoor tennis arena at Ellis Park from Friday to Sunday.
A very different South African team from the one that beat Zimbabwe in the first two Standard Bank limited-overs matches will take the field at St George’s Park on Wednesday for the third and last match. South Africa barely raised a sweat in winning the first two matches by huge margins.

South Africa put on a ruthless and clinical display to beat Zimbabwe by 165 runs in the first Standard Bank match in front of a crowd of about 7 000 at the Wanderers on Friday. South Africa, sent in by Zimbabwe, made a formidable 301 for the loss of seven wickets in their 50 overs, with 104 runs coming off the last 10 overs.

South African captain Graeme Smith will definitely play in the first Standard Bank limited-overs cricket match against Zimbabwe at the Wanderers on Friday. He said the coming series might be tougher than expected. ”You’re not sure about the bowler you’re going to be playing against … you don’t know what you’re going to face.”

England lost the fifth Standard Bank limited overs international in the field, and not in the batting. This is the opinion of the England captain, Michael Vaughan, when he spoke to the media after the match at Buffalo Park on Wednesday, which South Africa won by seven runs.

South African cricket coach Ray Jennings said on Tuesday that he will apply for the position of coach if the players want him to. The position of coach is to be advertised later this week. Jennings was originally appointed on a short-term basis, until after the tour of the West Indies in March.
