Graeme Smith: ‘We’re hungry’

The captain of the South African cricket team, Graeme Smith, said South Africa planned to build on their excellent performance in the last two Standard Bank matches for the remainder of the seven-match series against England. Speaking after South Africa’s 108 run victory at Newlands on Sunday, Smith said they were hungry for success.

Polished SA cricketers beat England

A polished performance by a determined South African side saw them beat England by 108 runs in the fourth Standard Bank one-day international at Newlands on Sunday, and take a two-one lead in the series. Set a target of 292 runs at nearly six runs a ball, England were always on the back foot.

SA cricketers ‘really want to win’

South Africa and England go into the fourth Standard Bank one-day international at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday with a win each, but the South Africans may have the edge over the visitors ahead of the fourth match. Coach Ray Jennings said on Saturday that the team have shown their class by chasing two big totals and getting them.

Match ends in thrilling tie

The second Standard Bank one-day international between South Africa and England played in Bloemfontein on Wednesday ended in a thrilling tie which kept the capacity crowd glued to their seats right to the end. Both sides scored 270 runs in their 50 overs. England go into the third match in Port Elizabeth on Friday with a 1-0 lead.

SA to ‘get back to basics’ after defeat

The captains of the South African and England cricket teams said after the first Standard Bank one-day international at the Wanderers on Sunday that the toss had been a very important element of the game. England won the match by 26 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis formula, after torrential rain prevented any play after four o’clock in the afternoon.

SA face uphill battle

South Africa have an uphill battle if they are to save the fifth Castle Lager/MTN cricket Test against England at Supersport Park, despite a career best six wickets for 81 runs by Andre Nel. At close of play on the fourth day, South Africa had 59 for two in their second innings, and still trailed England by 53 runs.

Day of frustration for South Africa

The third day of the fifth and final Castle Lager/MTN cricket Test between South Africa and England at Supersport Park on Sunday was a day of frustration for players and spectators alike. With more than three hours lost because of lightning, rain and bad light, only 46 overs and two balls were bowled throughout the day.
