A masterful third-wicket partnership of 330 by Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla helped South Africa take complete control on the third day of the first Castle Lager Test between South Africa and New Zealand at the Wanderers on Saturday. At stumps, New Zealand had 57 for three, and trailed South Africa by 473.

A career-best haul by Dale Steyn and an unbroken partnership of 159 between Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis put South Africa in control of the first Castle Lager Test between South Africa and New Zealand at the Wanderers on Friday. South Africa were 179 for two at close of play, for an overall lead of 287.

Shane Bond celebrated his first Test against South Africa by taking four wickets on the opening day of the first Castle Lager Test between South Africa and New Zealand, as South Africa were bundled out for 226, an hour-and-a-quarter after tea. New Zealand had 41 for two when stumps were drawn.

Veteran bowler Shaun Pollock has been included in a 12-man squad named for the first Test against New Zealand at the Wanderers from Thursday, but it is by no means a foregone conclusion that he will play. Although he travelled to Pakistan for both the Test and one-day internationals, Pollock did not play in either of the Test matches.

A tired but elated Proteas cricket team flew into OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday night carrying two silver trophies from their tour of Pakistan. The South Africans won the Test series one-nil, and secured a three-two victory in the one-day international series with a thrilling win in Lahore on Monday.

The Free State may have lost the ”Orange” part of its name in the new South Africa, but Bloemfontein was a sea of orange as the city prepared for the Currie Cup final between the Cheetahs and the Lions on Saturday afternoon. Almost every vehicle in the city streets sported an orange Cheetahs flag, and orange was the colour to wear.

South Africa put up a disappointing performance in the third and final Spar Challenge Test against Uganda at Pretoria University’s Mamelodi campus on Friday night, going down 30-34. South Africa win the series two-one, after winning the first two Tests.

International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Malcolm Speed described the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship, which ended on Monday, as ”a great event”. He also praised tournament director Steve Elworthy of Cricket South Africa for the way in which the tournament had been run.

The inaugural Twenty20 World Championship has been whittled down from 12 teams to just four, and by 10pm on Saturday evening, it will be known which two teams will battle it out in the final at the Wanderers on Monday. The first semifinal, pits Pakistan against New Zealand, and the second, between Australia and India, should be a cracker.
