South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock believes the start of the Rugby World Cup in France on Friday has taken some of the pressure off the cricket team ahead of the ICC Twenty20 tournament. ”We’re a sports mad country, but I think a lot of the expectations are focussed on the Springboks,” Pollock said at a press conference on Wednesday.
There is a serious amount of work to be done before the International Cricket Council Twenty20 World Cup tournament, which starts on September 11, said South African cricket coach Mickey Arthur on Monday, after the Proteas’ return from their 3-0 one-day international series victory over Zimbabwe.
”We need to meet them head on in every area,” England captain Jason Robinson said ahead of the first Test against South Africa in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Robinson acknowledged England could be seen as underdogs, but said that would have been the case even if more of the regular team had been in South Africa.
Cricketers are concerned that the amount of international cricket being played could be detrimental to the game. Cricket South Africa denied on Monday that it had offered to host the one-day international (ODI) series between Australia and Zimbabwe. Earlier, the Australian government announced that it would not permit the Australian cricket team to travel to Zimbabwe for the three-match series, scheduled for July.
Senior cricket administrators are to meet on Thursday to review the Proteas’ performance over the past year. Among other things, the administrators will be discussing the team’s somewhat erratic performance at the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean, where they lost four of the 10 matches they played.
