No sign of gay protest blood

The discredited Gay and Lesbian Alliance’s (GLA) alleged mass defiance of a ban on blood from gay male donors could still not be confirmed by the South African National Blood Service on Tuesday. Gay community organisations and spokespersons have slammed the GLA as a fake organisation.

Gay blood protest: Did it really happen?

There was no clarity on Monday on whether a protest campaign by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance (GLA) against a ban on gay blood donors actually took place. The GLA claimed it had recruited more than 100 gay men to donate blood to the South African National Blood Service without disclosing their sexual activities.

More than 500 relocated after floods damage homes

With more than 500 people relocated because of rain damage to their shacks, Johannesburg’s emergency services has urged people living near water lines and crossing low-lying bridges to exercise caution. Some residents of Klipspruit, Alexandra, Diepsloot, Ennerdale and Kaya Sands had been moved, Gauteng Provincial Services said on Thursday.

Jo’burg flood rescuers under fire

Shots were fired at Johannesburg’s emergency services and police who had rushed to the rescue of three people reportedly swept away by flood waters in Kya Sands on Thursday. ”We arrived at where they were supposed to be washed away and suddenly shots were fired towards the river,” an emergency services spokesperson said.

Johannesburg roads flooded by heavy rain

Johannesburg’s emergency services urged caution near bridges and rivers on Thursday as another night of heavy rains raised flood fears. A tow-truck driver rescued a woman who was swept away in her car while crossing a bridge on Witkoppen Road in Sunninghill and two taxis were involved in a head-on collision on the Golden Highway.

Anger at Zuma’s sneaky court date

The SA National Editors Forum was consulting editors and lawyers on Wednesday about the media’s exclusion from former deputy president Jacob Zuma’s rape hearing. Reporters were barred from the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, when Zuma was charged with rape. They were also not allowed immediate access to the docket.

Govt to respect gay marriage ruling

The government has noted a ruling by the Constitutional Court on Thursday that same-sex marriages be allowed and will respect the judgement, spokesperson Joel Netshitenze said. ”The Department of Home Affairs will assess what practical steps will be needed to give effect to the change in the law and make appropriate recommendations to the minister,” he said.
