Donovan Moodley asked for a retrial in the Johannesburg High Court on Friday, saying he did not kill student Leigh Matthews. He was framed, he contended, adding that he would plead not guilty to all three of the charges against him — murder, kidnapping and extortion — if granted a new trial. He also asked for protection for his family and his partner, Yashika Singh.

Owners of certain vehicles will pay more for fuel next year when regulations to encourage the use of cleaner fuels come into effect, the South African Petroleum Industry Association said on Wednesday. Drivers of luxurious performance vehicles will pay a levy of at least 10 cents more if they choose to use 95-octane fuel, for example.

The father of 10-year-old kidnap victim Liam Aspeling was shot and wounded while in a witness-protection programme, the Vereeniging Regional Court heard on Friday. Vernon Aspeling is a state witness in the Cape High Court trial of a group of people facing 28 charges, including robbery and kidnapping.

About 145 Durban train drivers are expected to go on strike on Thursday afternoon over new rosters, a day after at least 28 coaches were burnt in Gauteng by commuters angered by delays. The drivers’ union will also meet Metrorail CEO Lauriette Modipane to discuss the safety of its drivers in the wave of train torchings.

The four men had expected to apply for bail on Wednesday, but the investigating officer and two files relating to the case had arrived too late for adequate preparation.

According to its constitution, it was formed by Africa’s ”most senior print, magazine, broadcast and other electronic media editors and media educators” to defend and promote media freedom and independence.

Friday’s Constitutional Court judgement on medicine-pricing regulations should be interpreted as a victory for the Department of Health and citizens, Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said. ”The judgement cannot be interpreted to say the department was wrong,” she told reporters in Pretoria. The court, she said, merely identified ”a few minor defects” in the regulations.
