At least four workers were killed and 39 injured when a fire broke out on Thursday in a tower under construction in Dubai, the trading hub of the United Arab Emirates, a hospital official and witnesses said. Dozens of workers were trapped by thick smoke as rescue crews tried to reach them. Witnesses said they saw a man fall from one of the 37-storey building’s upper floors.

More than two dozen gay Arab men — arrested at what police called a mass homosexual wedding — could face government-ordered hormone treatments, five years in jail and a lashing, authorities said on Saturday. The interior ministry said police raided a hotel chalet earlier this month and arrested 22 men from the Emirates.

Backed by a barrage from warplanes and artillery, American troops fought their way into the western outskirts of Fallujah on Monday, seizing a hospital and two bridges over the Euphrates River in the first stage of a major assault on the insurgent stronghold. "We are determined to clean Fallujah of terrorists," Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said.

A massive car bomb exploded on the outskirts of Fallujah on Monday, killing seven United States marines and wounding several others, a US military official said. The strength of the blast sent the engine from the vehicle used in the bombing flying ”a good distance” from the site, said the official.
With a few carefully worded phrases, the United States military is apparently stepping back from its strict demands on ending the siege of Fallujah, creating an opening for an Iraqi force to take control of the city from 1 000 or more guerrilla holdouts.
