It was cramped, often bitterly cold, and had a railway line running through it yet Ireland’s Lansdowne Road — the world’s oldest rugby union Test venue — will be much missed. Ireland played their last Test at the Dublin stadium on Sunday, bidding the ”grand Old Lady” farewell in fine style.

Britain vowed on Wednesday it would not back down over a November deadline for reaching a power-sharing deal in Northern Ireland as it prepared to host crucial talks with the province’s politicians. Britain’s Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain said he believed a deal was possible but stressed that London was serious about closing down Northern Ireland’s Stormont assembly if a deal is not reached.

South African financial services firm Alexander Forbes drew strength from its diverse business interests to post earnings in line with expectations on Monday, although the mix of contributions was not as forecast.
