December retail sales shrink by 0,5%

South African retail sales fell by 0,5% year-on-year in December at constant prices, compared with a revised decline of 0,2% in November, Statistics South Africa said on Wednesday. In the three months to the end of December, retail sales increased by 0,3% compared to the same period the previous year.

Employment equity lagging in SA

South African companies are like Irish coffee — white on top and black at the bottom — said Jimmy Manyi, commissioner of the Employment Equity Commission on Saturday. Speaking at the University of Stellenbosch on Saturday, Myani used the analogy to explain the lack of employment equity.

PPI slows to ‘better than expected’ 9,4%

South Africa’s producer price inflation (PPI) slowed to 9,4% year-on-year in August, below forecasts, after a 10,3% increase in July, official data showed on Thursday. On a monthly basis, PPI increased by 0,7% after a 1,6% rise in July. Economists had forecast that annual PPI come in at 9,7%, while the monthly rate of increase was seen at 1%.

SA August vehicle sales fall, rates weigh

South African new vehicle sales declined by 3% to 58 040 units year-on-year in August as higher interest rates weigh on the passenger car sector. This was the fifth consecutive month of lower sales, but the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers said the August figure was only slightly down on the record sales for the same month last year.

Improved performance from Denel

Defence parastatal Denel reduced its net loss from R1,363-billion to R549,1-million for the year to the end of March — a 60% improvement. This was achieved on the back of a 17,8% growth in revenue from R2,773-billion to R3,268-billion. Gross profit for the 12 months rose to R754-million — a 675% improvement on the previous year’s profit of R131,1-million.

McBride cops to seek restraining order

Three Ekurhuleni metro policemen want a court order to ensure that metro police officers and chief Robert McBride do not come within 100m of them. The three — Stanley Segathevan, Patrick Johnstone and Ithumeleng Koko — were at the scene of an accident McBride was involved in last year, when he was allegedly intoxicated.
