Cycling looks for solutions after drug-tainted Tour

The 2007 Tour de France ended on Sunday after three weeks of unwelcome controversy and drama that has led to calls for far-reaching reforms ahead of 2008. One of the most tainted editions of the race since the Festina doping scandal in 1998 ended in triumph for Discovery Channel’s yellow jersey winner Alberto Contador on the Champs Elysees.

Contador takes the yellow jersey

Spaniard Alberto Contador won the drug-tainted Tour de France in Paris on Sunday when he held on to his 23-second overnight lead on Australia’s Cadel Evans to secure the race’s fabled yellow jersey. Contador becomes the first Spaniard to win the three-week race since Miguel Indurain from 1991 to 1995.

Moreau survives Alps to keep French hopes alive

French hopes of seeing one of their own riders fight for the Tour de France yellow jersey have been kept alive by a tiring, but optimistic Christophe Moreau. Moreau will go into the first of three ”transitional” stages on Wednesday in sixth place overall at three minutes and 18 seconds behind leader Michael Rasmussen.

Steegmans wins Tour second stage

Belgian rider Geert Steegmans won the second stage of the Tour de France, a 168,5km run between Dunkirk in France and Ghent in Belgium, on Monday. The Quick Step cyclist prevailed in a bunch sprint marred by a mass pile-up that stopped a sizeable portion of the peloton in its tracks 3km from the finish.

Rocky road to the yellow jersey

Under-fire defending champion Floyd Landis will be among the notable absentees when the 94th edition of the Tour de France kicks into gear on July 7. Landis’s future is still in limbo following his positive test for testosterone, which brought the Tour to its knees only days after he had sealed a spectacular yellow jersey triumph in Paris last year.

Barca avoid Champions League scrapheap

Barcelona and AS Roma made their own entries into the history books of the Champions League on Tuesday, although it was the defending champions who penned the most interesting reading. Frank Rijkaard’s Spanish giants calmed the nerves of their anxious fans with a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen at the Nou Camp which secured entry to the last 16.
