Researchers unveiled a 10-million-year-old jaw bone on Tuesday they believe belonged to a new species of great ape that could be the last common ancestor of gorillas, chimpanzees and humans. The Kenyan and Japanese team found the fragment, dating back to between 9,8-and 9,88-million years, in 2005 along with 11 teeth.

A series of bodies found dumped in secluded bushland on the edge of Kenya’s capital Nairobi has terrified locals and brought accusations of police executions in their war on the notorious Mungiki criminal gang. Locals say more than a dozen corpses have turned up in recent weeks, thrown by the roadside or left in scrub.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe celebrated a landmark agreement by Africa’s biggest trade bloc on Wednesday with a favourite pastime — attacking the West. ”Where does Europe get all the cotton it wears and the tea the British call their own — English tea? I want to know in which part of Britain tea is grown and to this day I have not found it,” he said.
Africa’s biggest trade bloc Comesa (Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa) approved a common external tariff system on Wednesday, clearing a major hurdle for a customs union intended to boost trade in some of the world’s poorest nations.

Western and African diplomats met in Kenya on Thursday in a push to ensure peace talks between Somalia’s interim government and rival Islamists go ahead despite rising tensions in the Horn of Africa nation. The Arab League is mediating talks in the Sudanese capital Khartoum between the Islamists and the Western-backed but virtually powerless government.
