A trust fund in memory of murdered Pakistan and former South African coach Bob Woolmer has been established in South Africa, it was announced on Friday. The Bob Woolmer Trust Fund will raise money for a number of projects, including a coaching academy that the former England cricketer was involved in at the time of his death.

South Africa cricket captain Graeme Smith looked forward with confidence on Wednesday to the World Cup starting in West Indies next month after his team completed a 3-1 one-day series triumph over Pakistan. Inspired by a five-wicket haul by 33-year-old paceman Shaun Pollock, South Africa defeated Pakistan by nine wickets.
Convenor of selectors Haroon Lorgat said South Africa were confident of reaching racial targets after naming 14 non-white players on Tuesday in their provisional 30-man squad for the World Cup. Cricket South Africa has imposed a target of seven non-white players in the final 15-man squad, which needs to be announced by February 13.

The Springbok team management have condemned the number of old South African flags that were on view during their tour of Ireland and England and upon their return home on Tuesday. A couple of flags greeted the team’s first black captain, Chiliboy Ralepelle, at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday.

Chiliboy Ralepelle, who became the first black captain of South Africa’s rugby side when he led them against the World XV in a non-Test fixture on Sunday, said the Springboks’ tour to Ireland and England was a chilly learning experience. ”The tour was all about getting everyone ready for Test rugby,” Ralepelle told reporters in Johannesburg.

Jim Furyk sprinted four strokes clear at the Sun City Challenge on Friday while former European number one Colin Montgomerie had a second round to forget, carding a quintuple-bogey nine in his 77. World number two Furyk shot a six-under-par 66, picking up three birdies on each nine, to finish 10-under on 134 after lightning held up play for nearly three hours.
South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs will meet with Indian police for questioning over his involvement in the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal. Since 2000 Gibbs has declined to tour India over fears of being detained by police. South Africa coach Mickey Arthur said on Wednesday Gibbs would hold a brief meeting with police on arrival in Delhi.

Prop Benn Robinson will make his debut and wing Cameron Shepherd his first start in two changes Australian coach John Connolly has made to his team for Saturday’s Tri-Nations Test against South Africa. Shepherd replaces Lote Tuqiri, who was suspended for a dangerous tackle in Australia’s 34-27 defeat by New Zealand in Auckland on August 19.

Natal Sharks utility back JP Pietersen will make his Test debut for South Africa in the Tri-Nations match against Australia in Johannesburg on Saturday. The 20-year-old was at fullback throughout the Springboks’ training session on Tuesday and coach Jake White said the time was now right to give some of the up-and-coming talent in his squad a chance.
