Paula Radcliffe made a triumphant return to marathon racing and Martin Lel reprised his thrilling London victory to win at Sunday’s New York City Marathon. Radcliffe, running her first marathon in two years after taking a maternity break and recuperating from injury, beat Gete Wami after a race-long duel.

Roger Federer hoisted aloft the US Open trophy for a fourth straight year on Sunday after victory over Novak Djokovic before swiftly turning his gaze to Pete Sampras and the all-time record for grand slam titles. The victory was worth ,4-million to the Swiss world number one, but the only figure Federer really cared about was moving his grand slam titles haul to 12.

Venus Williams underlined her title credentials at the US Open on Sunday after she reached the quarterfinals with an impressive 6-4 6-2 victory over fifth seed Ana Ivanovic. The Wimbledon champion, seeded 12th, was close to her dominant best as she made it four wins out of four against the Serb, clinching victory in 80 minutes.
Steve Stricker ended a six-year victory drought on Sunday with birdies on the last three holes to give him a two-stroke win over KJ Choi of South Korea at the Barclays Classic. Stricker (40) stood two over par for the day through the first 13 holes, but charged back with four birdies over the last five holes for a two-under-par 69 and a total of 16-under-par 268.

Tiger Woods has won six United States PGA Tour events in a row and is producing some of the best golf of his career, but coach Hank Haney says there is still room for improvement. Haney, who helped guide Woods through a swing change that has revitalised his game, said the world number one has been hitting his irons so accurately that his short game has been neglected.

Playing a rare night match at Louis Armstrong Stadium, twice defending champion Federer rolled into the round of 16 with a crushing 6-3 6-3 6-0 victory over unseeded Vince Spadea.
