Court: Rewrite law on same-sex partnerships

Constitutional Court judges asked on Thursday why the government was not proactively rewriting the law on same-sex partnerships? Judge Kate O’Regan said the court had on ”numerous occasions” called on the state to rewrite the law. ”It needs to be dealt with and it needs to be dealt with urgently,” she said.

Great urgency for agreement on legal charter

There is no final agreement yet on a Legal Services Charter but finalising it is urgent, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development said on Friday. While there is broad agreement on the need for transformation of ownership of traditionally white firms, there is no agreement on black economic empowerment quotas.

Women’s march veterans retrace steps

Veterans of the 1956 women’s march returned to Pretoria on Women’s Day on Wednesday to march on the Union Buildings as they did 50 years ago. The benefits of freedom must reach everyone, women told President Thabo Mbeki at the Union Buildings. ”This constitutes a failure when we say the fruits of our liberation have not reached our women,” Mbeki agreed.

Who are South Africa’s grant cheats?

Civil servants who fraudulently claimed social grants include police officers, National Prosecuting Authority employees and a staffer in the president’s office. The list of 1 792 civil servants who are required to pay back fraudulently obtained grants was released by the Department of Social Development.
