Wales produced a gutsy display of tenacious defence to beat France 29-12 in Cardiff on Saturday to claim their second Six Nations grand slam in four years. The Welsh completed their remarkable transformation from a side that crashed out of last year’s World Cup in the group stages.

England dash France’s grand-slam hopes

England, fired by the boot of Jonny Wilkinson, dashed French hopes of a Six Nations grand slam with a 24-13 win over France at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday. It was England’s first away win over France in the Six Nations since 2000, and left unbeaten Wales as the only side now capable of claiming the grand slam.

SA’s year of triumph

South Africa crowned a memorable year for rugby by beating England 15-6 in the final of the World Cup, a gripping tournament in which flair and flamboyance took a back seat to brawn and the boot. Panache might have been largely replaced by pragmatism, but the rugby remained compelling in the IRB’s well-attended 20-team showpiece tournament.

Rugby Sevens, the abbreviated form of rugby union, is seeking to ride the wave of popularity in the sport generated by the highly successful World Cup in France. The three-day season-opening Dubai leg of the World Series Sevens circuit attracted 32 000 spectators a day, but importantly offered a showcase for many future international stars.
