System meltdown as China tries to sell tickets

China’s Olympic ticketing system appeared to suffer another meltdown as the final phase of sales for the Beijing Games got under way on Monday, fans and official media said. Long internet delays and system crashes were reported as the 1,38-million tickets went on sale, echoing last year’s fiasco in which the computer booking network completely crashed.

Developing world easier for working women

Women in developing countries find it easier to break through the so-called glass ceiling than their colleagues in the West, according to a global study by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The firm interviewed more than a hundred business people in eight countries, including China, India and Germany, for the report on women’s economic participation for the Women’s Forum held in Deauville, France, last week.

Bumper profits and big buyouts

The global mining industry has never had it so good. Soaring commodity prices — nickel hit a record of R209 a tonne recently — driven by a shortage of supply and increasing demand have led to bumper profits for big and small mining groups. The huge amount of cash generated has led to increasingly audacious mergers and acquisitions.
