South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini withdrew from the Target World Challenge before the start of Sunday’s final round, citing personal reasons. The 31-year-old, playing in the elite 16-man event for the first time, propped up the leaderboard after shooting a four-over-par 76 in Saturday’s third round at Sherwood Country Club.
The Internationals, who outgunned the Americans in world ranking strength, were left to rue their dismal foursomes record after losing the Presidents Cup by 19-½ points to 14-½ on Sunday. American Woody Austin twice ended up in water, first with his ball and then comically on his stomach, while playing the par-four 14th in Friday’s foursomes matches at the Presidents Cup. Tiger Woods maintained his three-shot lead at the Tour Championship after resisting a glut of low scoring on Saturday, spearheaded by United States Masters champion Zach Johnson with a dazzling 10-under-par 60. Woods, hunting a seventh PGA Tour title this year and inaugural FedExCup honours, fired a 64 in the third round at a sun-drenched East Lake Golf Club.
Ernie Els was in upbeat mood after finishing third at the United States PGA Championship on Sunday, sensing he is close to giving world number one Tiger Woods a run for his money. The 37-year-old South African, six strokes behind leader Woods at the start of the final round, signed off with a four-under-par 66 in steamy conditions at Southern Hills Country Club.
The anticipated head-to-head between Rory Sabbatini and Tiger Woods never materialised in Sunday’s final round at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Sabbatini, one ahead going into a rain-sodden day at Firestone Country Club, struggled with his swing and slipped back into a tie for second place after closing with a four-over-par 74.
David Beckham made his long-awaited debut for Los Angeles Galaxy in front of a capacity crowd when he came on as a substitute in the 78th minute of Saturday’s exhibition match against Chelsea. The England midfielder, who has been struggling to recover from an injury to his left ankle, was cheered loudly by the 27 000 fans at the Home Depot Centre.
The sponsors want it. The fans are waiting for it. But David Beckham’s debut for Los Angeles Galaxy remains in doubt. Although Beckham’s swollen ankle has responded well to treatment since he arrived in Los Angeles last week, Galaxy officials accept the longer-term picture is much more significant.
