‘Europe played better’

Europe retained the Ryder Cup in emphatic style on Sunday as they beat the United States by a record-equalling 18-1/2 points to 9-1/2 at the K Club to claim the trophy for a third successive time. Swedish rookie Henrik Stenson had the honour of clinching the point that guaranteed victory before the Europeans completed a memorable week with their best-ever performance in the last-day singles.

Although American Stewart Cink won the first point in the last-day singles, holders Europe were cruising to Ryder Cup victory at the K Club on Sunday. Colin Montgomerie beat David Toms one up in the top match to maintain his remarkable eight-match unbeaten singles record in the biennial competition and stretch Europe’s lead to 11-7.

Woods seals fifth Firestone victory

Firestone specialist Tiger Woods won his fourth consecutive PGA Tour title with a protracted playoff victory over fellow American Stewart Cink at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday. As late afternoon rain swept across the course, the world number one triumphed by sinking an eight-foot birdie putt at the fourth extra hole.

Woods leads after bizarre Firestone finish

Firestone specialist Tiger Woods took charge in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational second round on Friday, despite running up a remarkable bogey-five on his final hole. Woods, champion here four times in his last seven starts, struck the clubhouse roof with his approach to the par-four ninth and was fortunate to get a free drop before completing a six-under-par 64.

Peerless Tiger coasts to victory at Medinah

Tiger Woods, ice-cool throughout the final round, cruised to his 12th career major with a five-shot victory in the 88th PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club on Sunday. Tied for the overnight lead with playing partner Luke Donald of Britain, the world number one fired a four-under-par 68 in low-scoring conditions to lift the Wanamaker Trophy for the third time.

Ruthless Woods dominates Open

Tiger Woods, oozing confidence throughout the final round, completed a successful and emotional British Open title defence with a two-shot victory over compatriot Chris DiMarco on Sunday. One stroke clear at the start of the day, the 30-year-old American birdied three of the last five holes at Royal Liverpool for a five-under-par 67, sealing his 11th career major.

Els starts off well at the Open

Former champion Ernie Els, yet to win this year, moved into a seven-way tie for the early lead with a four-under-par 68 in the British Open first round on Thursday. Determined to shake off a loss of form following a knee injury last season, the big South African rattled up six birdies and two bogeys in near-perfect scoring conditions at Hoylake.
