Nadal wake-up call as top names breeze through

Second seed Rafael Nadal got a wake-up call on Thursday but title contenders Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters and Martina Hingis were in a class of their own, breezing into the Australian Open third round. Clay court specialist Nadal, drawn to face world number one Roger Federer in this year’s final, was given a marathon workout by 61st ranked German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Federer leads way into third round

Roger Federer stepped up his relentless march to another Australian Open title on Wednesday, sweeping into the third round alongside draw cards Amelie Mauresmo, Andy Roddick and Serena Williams. The world number one blasted past veteran Swede Jonas Bjorkman 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in just 95 minutes as he chases his third Australian crown and 10th Grand Slam.

Russian top seed Maria Sharapova survived a massive scare in sapping heat at the Australian Open on Tuesday as other top names avoided the worst of the weather to make short work of their opponents. On a scorching Melbourne day, with temperatures touching 40 degrees Celsius, the women’s top seed, who needed treatment for cramps, squeezed past unseeded Frenchwoman Camille Pin.

Defending champions Roger Federer and Amelie Mauresmo overcame early jitters to negotiate the first round of the Australian Open on Monday on a day overshadowed by brawling Serbian and Croatian fans. Unseeded seven-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams breezed through her match against Italian 27th seed Mara Santangelo 6-2, 6-1.

West Indies collapse against India

A dismal West Indies batting collapse on Wednesday handed India an unexpected victory in their DLP Cup one-day international to keep alive their hopes of making the tri-series final. India were skittled for 162 in 39.3 overs by the West Indies, but the Caribbean islanders failed to punch home the advantage, being bowled out for 140 in reply.

Tendulkar shines but Windies too strong for India

Sachin Tendulkar smashed a masterly 141 on his comeback from injury on Thursday but it was to no avail as the West Indies beat India in a rain-affected DLF Cup one-day international here.The West Indies won by 29 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method after scoring 141-2 in 20 overs as they chased India’s 309-5 when the weather settled matters.

Australia too strong for West Indies

Australia returned to international cricket with a bang on Tuesday, sparking an embarrassing West Indies batting collapse to win their opening DLF Cup one-dayer by 78 runs. Set 280 to win at 5,6 runs an over, the West Indies looked to be cruising with Shivnarine Chanderpaul smashing a majestic 92 before it all went badly wrong.

Westwood defends Ryder Cup pick

Ryder Cup wildcard pick Lee Westwood refused to be drawn into the row over his controversial selection for the European team on Wednesday, following Thomas Bjorn’s furious reaction to being left out. Captain Ian Woosnam’s decision sparked a torrent of abuse from an angry Bjorn, who was ranked 13th on the Ryder Cup list while Westwood was 21st.
