Investigations gathered pace on Thursday into whether contaminated petrol was responsible for a mysterious problem that has damaged the engines of hundreds of cars across Britain. Retailers and suppliers said they were carrying out tests on fuel but had so far found no evidence of any abnormalities.

British prosecutors charged a man on Friday with seeking to kidnap and kill a member of the armed forces as part of an alleged terrorist plot apparently aimed against Muslims who had served with British troops in Iraq. Parviz Khan (36) was one of five charged with various terrorism-related offences. All were due to appear before magistrates in central London later on Friday.

British police carried out a major nationwide anti-terrorism operation on Wednesday, arresting eight people in a series of dawn raids which media reports said had thwarted a significant planned attack. Detectives said the people were arrested at addresses across the city of Birmingham on ”suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism”.

A long-awaited British police report into Princess Diana’s death due this week could finally lay to rest conspiracy theories that she was murdered rather than that she died the victim of a tragic accident. A three-year inquiry headed by Britain’s former top police officer John Stevens is expected to announce on Thursday it has ruled out foul play.

British police said on Wednesday they were now treating the death of poisoned former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko as murder, raising the stakes in an investigation that has extended from London to Moscow. Litvinenko, a fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, began complaining of feeling ill on November 1.

Muslim extremists are plotting at least 30 major terrorist attacks in Britain and the threats may involve chemical and nuclear devices, according to the head of Britain’s domestic spy agency. Eliza Manningham-Buller, head of intelligence agency MI5, said young British Muslims are being groomed to become suicide bombers.
British police on Thursday said they foiled a plot to blow up several aircraft flying between Britain and the United States in what Washington said might have been an attempted al-Qaeda strike. ”We are confident we have disrupted a plan by terrorists to cause untold death and destruction,” said London police’s Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson.
More than 100 000 knives, including machetes, meat cleavers and axes, were handed over to police during Britain’s five-week knife amnesty which ended last month, the country’s Home Office said on Friday. Another 12 645 were handed over in Scotland.
