United walk tall in Europe

Manchester United were crowned kings of Europe for the third time on Wednesday when they beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a breathless all-English Champions League final had finished 1-1 after extra time. United’s 37-year-old goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, saved the decisive spot kick from substitute Nicolas Anelka.

McGeechan to lead Lions to SA again

Ian McGeechan, the man who led the British and Irish Lions to their monumental series victory over South Africa in 1997, has been handed the chance to repeat the achievement against the world champions in 2009. As was widely expected, the vastly experienced coach was unveiled on Wednesday as the head coach for the three-Test, 10-match tour.

Lel, Mikitenko triumph in London Marathon

Kenyan Martin Lel retained his London Marathon title in a fantastic men’s race on Sunday when the first three broke the course record and the first six finishers recorded personal bests. In the women’s race, German Irina Mikitenko won her first major marathon title on only her second outing over the distance.
