The African National Congress has blamed its local leaders and those of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) for the violent protests in Diepsloot earlier this week. ”They allowed the situation to get out of control,” Pule Buthelezi, the general secretary of the ANC in the greater Johannesburg region, said on Friday.
An investigation will be launched into the shooting of three policemen and four awaiting trialists at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Johannesburg police said. ”For sure, we will launch a full scale investigation into the matter,” Superintendent Chris Wilken told reporters at the scene of the shootout.
Police were investigating claims by the Inkatha Freedom Party that African National Congress supporters were seen pasting voter registration stickers into the identity documents of voters in KwaZulu-Natal, the Independent Electoral Commission said on Wednesday afternoon.

Kaizer Chiefs spokesperson Putco Mafani briefly appeared in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly assaulting his wife, Phumeza, last weekend. Mafani faces a charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, prosecutor Berenice le Roux said.

A Zimbabwean MP dismissed on Tuesday assertions that talks between the ruling Zanu-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) were taking place. "There is absolutely nothing taking place. I can give you that at first hand," said Roy Bennett, a farmer and senior MDC official.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has called on the government to review the constitutional mandate of the South African Reserve Bank to make employment an explicit objective of its monetary policy. It said the strong rand has caused thousands of workers to lose their jobs.
The government was attacked on all fronts on Wednesday on issues pertaining to traditional leadership, but some government officials tried to downplay the rift between the state and the chiefs.
Gambling has became increasingly popular in South Africa, with the total expenditure on the activity growing from R6,8-billion in 2001 to R10,6-billion for the first 10 months of 2002, the National Gambling Board said on Wednesday.
