Branch chairperson Nomvula Hadi said workers were leaving the stadium when police opened fire with rubber bullets and teargas.

The trial of Annanias Mathe — the Mozambican national who escaped from Pretoria’s high-security C-Max prison — will resume in the Johannesburg High Court next July. Mathe, who faces 77 charges, appeared briefly before Judge Busi Mbha on Monday and his case was postponed to July 28 for plea and trial.

A three-bedroom house in Khutsong, near Carletonville, caved in as a result of a sinkhole on Friday, the Merafong municipality said. Spokesperson Seabo Gaeganelwe said nobody was injured as the occupants had moved two months ago. A survey in 1997 found that 90% of Khutsong fell within extremely high-risk zones.
Police arrested seven protesters at Soweto’s Jabulani hostel alone on Saturday for public violence in a demonstration over housing. Arrests were also made elsewhere in Soweto and in Alexandra, but the exact numbers were not yet known. Metro police fired rubber bullets to disperse protesters from the Nancefield and Dobsonville hostels.
