Twenty20 will transform players, says Chappell

Twenty20 cricket will place higher physical demands and mental toughness on players than one-day cricket did when it began in the 1970s, according to former Australian skipper Greg Chappell. Chappell, who quit as India coach in March following their one-day World Cup debacle, is back in the country to head an academy for players discovered on a nationwide talent contest.

Australia display reserves of strength in India

Australia underlined the strength of their reserves in a rain-abandoned first one-dayer against India on Saturday, and stand-in skipper Adam Gilchrist said their performance boded well for the future. Reserve ‘keeper Brad Haddin hit 69 and then all rounder James Hopes lashed 37 in the final overs to help revive Australia’s innings after early trouble to total 307-7.

India offered Formula One race for 2009

India has been made a conditional offer to stage a Formula One grand prix in 2009, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi said on Thursday. ”We have received a letter in this regard from Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of Formula One. The IOA will be the promoter and the first event will be held in 2009,” he told a news conference.

India virtually crashed out in the first round of the World Cup after they suffered a shattering 69-run defeat in their crunch Group B match against Sri Lanka on Friday. The 1983 champions were skittled in the 44th over as they failed in their attempt to chase Sri Lanka’s challenging total of 254 for six.
