Israelis battle on in Lebanon

Hezbollah guerrillas bombarded northern Israel with rockets and fought up to 6 000 Israeli troops in south Lebanon on Wednesday after Israel vowed to pursue the war until a strong international force arrived. Israeli commandos snatched suspected Hezbollah members from the ancient city of Baalbek in a helicopter-borne raid backed by air strikes that killed 19 people, including four children.

Lebanon: Up to 600 killed in Israel’s assault

Israeli warplanes and artillery hammered Lebanon again on Thursday as the Beirut government said up to 600 people may have been killed in Israel’s 16-day-old campaign against Hezbollah guerrillas. Israel’s inner Cabinet chose to pursue a strategy of air strikes and limited ground incursions, rather than a full-scale invasion of Lebanon.

Rockets fly as Israel pounds Lebanon

Israeli warplanes battered Lebanon on Tuesday, killing 26 people, and more Hezbollah rockets hit the Israeli city of Haifa, with no sign that diplomacy would halt the week-old conflict any time soon. Nine family members, including children, were killed and four wounded in an air strike on their house in the village of Aitaroun.

Israel widens Lebanon reprisals, 53 civilians die

Israel struck Beirut airport and blockaded Lebanese ports on Thursday, intensifying reprisals that have killed 53 civilians since Lebanese Hezbollah fighters seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight a day earlier. Hezbollah retaliated for Israeli ”massacres” by firing at least 70 rockets at Nahariya in northern Israel. A civilian was killed and at least 42 were wounded, Israeli medics said.
