Police engaged ”hooligans” in a tense game of cat and mouse through the informal settlement of Diepsloot on Thursday night. In an attempt to prevent a similar situation to that which emerged in Alexandra this week, police scoured the streets, dispersing any groups that had gathered.
Calm returned to Alexandra township on Wednesday night after earlier clashes between police and residents. Hardly any activity was visible late in the night, besides the flashing blue lights of police patrol vehicles. The stand-off between the police and residents arose in the aftermath of xenophobic attacks in the township this week.
”I want to go home.” This is the appeal of a Zimbabwean woman who fought to prevent her little sister from being raped during xenophobic attacks on Monday night. Willet Sibanda, who also has an eight-year-old daughter, received blankets and clothes at the Alexandra police station on Tuesday afternoon.

African National Congress (ANC) president Jacob Zuma on Friday called for a closure of the ”chapter of tension and mistrust” between the ruling party and its alliance partners. The relationship between the ANC and its alliance partners had become somewhat strained under the previous leadership of national President Thabo Mbeki.

The African National Congress (ANC) has come out in defence of its president, Jacob Zuma, after scathing criticism of him by University of South Africa rector Barney Pityana on Monday. ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe described Pityana’s statements as ”spurious” and a reflection of ”intellectual bankruptcy”.

White journalists expressed their dismay after they were denied access to the ”hottest news ticket in town” when barred from listening to African National Congress president Jacob Zuma at a forum exclusively for black journalists. Zuma addressed the Forum of Black Journalists’ relaunch in Johannesburg on Friday.
