Red-hot Sharapova beats Jankovic

Russian fifth seed Maria Sharapova crushed injured Serbian third seed Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-1 in a one-sided semifinal on Thursday to reach her second successive Australian Open final. It means Sharapova, a losing finalist here last year, will meet either Serbian third seed Ana Ivanovic or Slovak ninth seed Daniela Hantuchova in Saturday’s title decider.

When Jhiymy Mhiyles arrived in Sydney homeless and broke during the 2000 Olympic Games, he decided he liked Bondi beach so much that he set up camp on the cliffs overlooking the famous stretch of sand. White defends protection policy

South African coach Jake White says his controversial decision to protect top players ahead of the World Cup has been vindicated after an injury sidelined stand-in Springbok skipper Bob Skinstad. The player suffered a broken rib in Saturday night’s 25-17 Tri-Nations loss to Australia, ruling him out for at least six weeks and threatening his World Cup chances.

New-look Boks set for Aussie clash

South Africa will take only two players from the side that defeated Australia last month into Saturday’s Tri-Nations clash in Sydney against a Wallabies outfit missing suspended winger Lote Tuqiri. "We thought that it would change for the better," Brown says without rancour when asked about the 40th anniversary of a landmark vote that recognised Aborigines as full Australian citizens for the first time.

Solomons aid efforts increase amid disease fears

Aid agencies stepped up relief efforts in the Solomon Islands on Saturday as aftershocks rocked the region and fears grew of dysentery among the thousands of homeless tsunami victims. Nearly 5 500 people were left homeless in the region by the seismic event, which killed at least 34 people and wiped out entire villages.
