Osama bin Laden demanded European countries pull their troops out of Afghanistan and warned in a new audiotape of ”retaliation” against them.
An indictment of Sudan’s president for war crimes in Darfur would be ”disastrous” for the region and could affect humanitarian organisations there.
Osama bin Laden praises martyrdom in a new videotape posted on a militant website on Sunday by al-Qaeda’s media-production wing. The Bin Laden clip, which lasted less than a minute, was undated and part of a 40-minute video featuring purported al-Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan paying tribute to fellow militants who had been killed.

An audiotape purportedly from al-Qaeda deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri was posted on Friday on an Islamic website in which he read a poem praising ”martyrs of holy war” in Afghanistan, Palestine and elsewhere. There was no indication of when the tape was made.

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up on Thursday inside a restaurant frequented by Baghdad police, killing at least 33 people and seriously injuring 19, while a car bomb killed seven army recruits in Saddam Hussein’s hometown, police said. Also on Thursday, Iraqi soldiers found the bodies of 27 people near the Iranian border.

Insurgents killed 19 Iraqi security forces on Saturday in clashes around Baqouba, while United States and Iraqi forces intensified an offensive in a rebel-infested city that the Americans subdued last year — only to have the Iraqis lose control. Eight police officers died in a pair of shootouts in Baqouba, 55km north-east of Baghdad.
