Sixty-three percent of child deaths in South African hospitals could be avoided, the South African Human Rights Commission heard on Thursday. ”Thirty-one percent of those children died during their first 24 hours in hospital,” Dr Mphele Mulaudzi told a commission hearing in Johannesburg.
The number of people killed on South African roads over the Easter weekend has risen to 181, the Department of Transport said on Monday night. Of the 181 people who lost their lives in 143 crashes, 41 were drivers, 71 were passengers and 69 were pedestrians, spokesperson Ntau Letebele said.

Every raped woman is still confronted by the problem of testifying in an open court, Johannesburg High Court Judge George Maluleke said on Wednesday, following an application by the state to have the evidence of dozens of women allegedly raped by Mongezi Samuel Jinxela heard in camera.

The Andromeda galaxy is more than just the closest large spiral to the Milky Way as it appears through the naked eye, Wits University’s professor David Block said on Wednesday. Block said he had new evidence that Andromeda was involved in a ”violent head-on collision” with the neighbouring dwarf galaxy Messier 32.
South Africans will have to pay more for electricity as Eskom plans to increase prices in the next three years to pay for infrastructure, said company chief executive Thulani Gcabashe. He was addressing the Johannesburg Press Club on Thursday. ”We expect prices to go up as investments are made in infrastructure,” he said.
”Train surfing” by youngsters is an abhorrent and totally disturbing activity, Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe said on Wednesday. He was referring to the dangerous game of climbing on the roofs of moving railway carriages, or climbing in and out of trains while in motion. Radebe was addressing reporters at the launch of the railway safety regulatory inspection body in Johannesburg.
The Johannesburg High Court found Sipho Dube guilty on Tuesday of murdering six children and a woman, raping three girls and indecently assaulting boys. Judge Seun Moshidi also convicted Dube (30) of 10 kidnappings, one theft, one robbery, one common assault and one assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Alleged serial rapist and multiple murderer Sipho Dube (30) deserves to be locked up for life, the uncle of one of his victims said on Monday. The judge presiding over Dube’s case, Judge Seun Moshidi, said in his summary judgement on Monday that the crimes were characterised by the same modus operandi.
Much work must still be done to ensure optimal implementation of HIV and Aids policy in both primary and high schools, a conference heard on Thursday. Although the majority of schools have guidelines on the Department of Education’s HIV and Aids policy, a wide gap still exists between policy and implementation.
