Report: World faces threat of ‘cyber cold war’

A ”cyber cold war” waged over the world’s computers may become one of the biggest threats to security in the next decade, according to a report published on Thursday. About 120 countries are developing ways to use the internet as a weapon to target financial markets, government computer systems and utilities, internet security company McAfee said in an annual report.

BBC launches free internet TV service

Billed as the biggest change in the way viewers watch television in 40 years, the BBC launched an online service on Friday that allows people to download many programmes from the last week. BBC director general Mark Thompson says the arrival of the ”on-demand” iPlayer is as important as the first colour broadcasts in the 1960s.

Potter fans beg JK Rowling to ‘Save Harry!’

Thousands of Harry Potter fans have signed a petition urging JK Rowling to keep writing novels about the boy wizard after she admitted she could ”never say never” to more books. The ”Save Harry!” petition calls on Rowling to reverse her decision to end the best-selling series with the seventh and final instalment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Cutty Sark gutted by blaze

The Cutty Sark, a London landmark and the world’s last surviving 19th century tea clipper, was severely damaged in a blaze on Monday. Flames and black smoke shot high into the sky above the dry dock on the banks of the River Thames where the boat has stood as a major tourist attraction for more than 50 years.
