Liverpool will be one of two English clubs who entertain Milan’s finest this week as Arsenal attempt to recover from their 4-0 FA Cup mauling by Manchester United.

France and England meet next Saturday in the Six Nations at the same venue where French World Cup hopes were extinguished by their bitter rivals. New French coach Marc Lievremont has swept out a lot of the old guard and replaced them with fresh faces with a view to rebuilding for the 2011 World Cup.

France winger Vincent Clerc once again proved fatal to Irish rugby as he ran in a hat-trick of first-half tries to inspire the French to a 26-21 victory over Ireland in their Six Nations clash at the Stade de France on Saturday. The 26-year-old flyer — who would not have played had Julien Malzieu not been injured — notched up his sixth try in the last three Tests against the Irish.

Liverpool’s habit of leaving it to the last to qualify for the important stages of big tournaments was repeated on Tuesday as they inflicted a record 4-0 home defeat on Marseille to make the knockout stage of the Champions League. The 2005 Champions League winners’ victory probably also ensured that manager Rafael Benitez keeps his job.

Former British European Cup winners Liverpool and Celtic suffered another blow after both lost in the latest round of Champions League matches on Wednesday. Liverpool have just a point after three matches — having gone down 2-1 to Besiktas in Istanbul — while Celtic have three points following a 1-0 reverse away to Benfica.

South Africa may have reclaimed the World Cup for the southern hemisphere after a one-off win by England in 2003, but that is not to say that the debate over who is in the ascendancy has been resolved. South Africa captain John Smit will seek to emulate Francois Pienaar on Saturday in lifting the Rugby World Cup in the final and admits he is driven by a sense of destiny, though he accepts it will not fall into his lap. The 29-year-old hooker was present in Johannesburg when South Africa stunned the All Blacks and Pienaar received the World Cup from Nelson Mandela.

On Saturday, Springbok prop Os du Randt will look to bow out of rugby with a second World Cup winners’ medal. The 35-year-old is the sole survivor in the squad from the team that stunningly won the 1995 World Cup in South Africa, beating hot favourites the All Blacks, and he is looking forward to his retirement, which this time will be definitive.

Francois Steyn will become the second-youngest player in a World Cup final on Saturday, hoping he doesn’t suffer the same fate as All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu who was a loser against the South Africans in 1995. Steyn, who is 20 years and five months old, has been one of Springbok coach Jake White’s young lions.
