Airlines bemoan wooden wildlife

South Africa’s favourite tourist souvenirs are proving a nightmare for airlines. Every evening, when holidaymakers gather at Johannesburg International airport to check in for the night flights home, the struggle begins anew. With dogged determination passengers try to bring wooden giraffes on board that are almost six-foot tall — as hand luggage, off course!

The day of the African child

Screen idol Brad Pitt was almost in tears when he visited a hospital in Durban in May to be confronted with the young victims of HIV/Aids. Pitt was experiencing for the first time the circumstances under which millions of children on the continent live and often die.
