Suicide linked to poverty is commonplace in Pakistan and since the mid-1990s, some 150 000 small farmers have committed suicide in neighbouring India.
The US says it will freeze $700-million in aid to Pakistan until it moves to fight the spread of fertiliser-based explosives to Afghanistan.
