Two group-A teams within three days have described South Africa’s bowling attack as lacking variety and it appears captain Graeme Smith might be starting to listen. After Scotland on Tuesday recorded their best World Cup score of 186, captain Ryan Watson hinted South Africa might hold an edge over Australia — but not due to their bowling.
South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs hit six sixes in one over against The Netherlands at the World Cup on Friday, setting an international record. The 33-year-old Gibbs smashed the first three balls from legspinner Daan van Bunge over the short boundary straight down the ground at Warner Park in the 30th over.
South Africa’s record pursuit of 434 last year against Australia has given it belief that anything is possible in one-day cricket. Captain Graeme Smith pointed to the 3-2 series win over Australia in March 2006, capped by scoring 438 in the final game, as proof.
Australian and South African squads landed on St Kitts late on Monday ahead of practice sessions on Tuesday to analyse either injured or out-of-form players before their opening Cricket World Cup matches. Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds will increase the intensity of his training, having recently undergone biceps surgery.
After an emergency hotel evacuation and a dispute over unsafe pitches, South Africa cricket coach Mickey Arthur must be wondering what else can go wrong. Helped by Australia’s five-match losing streak, South Africa became the top-ranked limited-overs team by routing Pakistan 4-0 last month.
Shane Warne, cricket’s greatest wicket-taker, is turning from England foe to friend. The Australian, who has claimed 172 English Test wickets and counting, announced his involvement on Monday in a school initiative aiming to bolster and hone England’s scant spin-bowling skills.

Approaching the midpoint of the English Premier League season, Chelsea already are way ahead of last year’s record pace. With their 3-2 win over Fulham on Monday, Chelsea won their 16th game in 18 matches and stayed nine points atop the league. Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham also won to keep pace.
