A sparkling unbeaten 90 by Kevin Pietersen led England to a thrilling three-wicket victory over holders West Indies in their final Champions Trophy Group A match on Saturday. Pietersen helped England chase down a difficult target under lights, finishing on 276 for seven with nine balls remaining to record their first win of a disappointing tournament.
South Africa have now lost the ”choker” tag which has haunted them in the World Cup, all rounder Jacques Kallis said on Sunday. Although they have regularly won lesser tournaments easily South Africa have faltered on the big stage, notably in their one-run loss to Australia in the 1999 World Cup Super Sixes.
The West Indies will have more than damaged pride to play for when they open the defence of their ICC Champions Trophy with an unwanted qualifying match against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The two-times world champions have been in decline since the mid-1990s and Brian Lara’s side will need to show a marked improvement in form.
