Igesund puts boot into Bafana

After watching Bafana Bafana lose 3-1 to Tunisia in the Africa Cup of Nations group stage game on Sunday night, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Gordon Igesund says certain players are not being used in their best positions. ”I believe that a team has to be built around the strengths of its players,” he said.

Cosmos stuck at the bottom of the log

Jomo Cosmos showed why they are at the bottom of the Absa Premiership table with another insipid performance against Thanda Royal Zulu at the Ackerville Stadium in Witbank on Saturday. The hosts, who lost 2-1, will remain at the bottom of the log until the season kicks off in February.

Pirates draw with Stars

Orlando Pirates had their work cut out for them against the Free State Stars in front of a crowd of 15 000 at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday. Ralf Matema netted in the 10th minute for the hosts, but his early strike was cancelled by Prince Olumu three minutes after the break when Bennet Chenene picked Matema out in the box and the Zimbabwean shot home.

Pirates beat Royals 3-1

In coach Owen da Gama’s first game in charge for Orlando Pirates, they lost to Thanda Royal Zulu in a cup game. Da Gama’s charges showed their improvement since his arrival by beating the Royals 3-1 in a Premier Soccer League game at Johannesburg Stadium on Sunday.

Ertugral familiar with Sundowns’ strengths

Last season Ajax Cape Town beat Mamelodi Sundowns four times under the guidance of Muhsin Ertugral, who also led the young Cape team to an emphatic victory in the Absa Cup, beating none other than Sundowns in the final. The sultry Durban weather did not deter Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs from entertaining a capacity crowd with four fantastic goals in a pulsating Premier Soccer League match at the Absa Stadium on Saturday. Chiefs striker Mabhudi Khanyeza scored one of the quickest goals, in 17 seconds, to be seen in South Africa.
