Second straight win for Wits

Bidvest Wits fought off the constantly attacking Kaizer Chiefs to record a second great, early-season victory in the space of a week in a Castle Premiership clash at the Olympia Stadium on Friday night. Noah Chivuta slotted home from the penalty spot in the 65th minute to give the Clever Boys another memorable victory and to send them to the top of the log.

SuperSport scrape past Benoni

SuperSport United recorded a 1-0 victory against a hapless Benoni Premier United in a Castle Premier Soccer League clash at the Germiston Stadium on Friday night. Katlego Mphela netted from the penalty spot in the 65th minute after Fikru Tefera was brought down by Nkosinathi Ngema outside the 18-yard area, but the referee adjudged the foul to have taken place inside the box.

Josephs gives Parreira’s mini-camp the thumbs-up

Bidvest Wits University goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs believes the two-day mini-camp for aspiring Bafana Bafana players is an excellent opportunity for those who want to represent their country at the 2010 Soccer World Cup. ”We have so many players who can play for Bafana and too little time to see who is best in the 11 positions,” said Josephs.

Lack of goals concerns Parreira

Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira named 23 players — including six strikers — for a mini-camp that will give fringe players a chance to show that they have what it takes to represent the national team in 2010. Parreira is hoping he and his staff will be surprised when they put members of the mini-camp squad through their paces on Monday and Tuesday.

Meiring settles in at Swallows

Former Golden Arrows striker Alton Meiring has joined Moroka Swallows at their pre-season camp and impressed coach Ian Gorowa so much that he will travel to Germany with the squad to play in the inaugural Volkswagen Cup. Swallows will face Vfl Wolfsburg next Wednesday in a tournament sponsored by the German car manufacturer.

Can Ajax do it again? That is the question leading up to Saturday’s Absa Cup soccer final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town in Durban. It will be the fourth time the two sides meet this season, and in the three previous encounters Ajax got the better of the Premier Soccer League champions.
