A defiant Iran vowed on Wednesday that nothing could halt its controversial nuclear programme, in a direct challenge to the United Nations Security Council that could risk international sanctions. With the country basking in national pride after scientists successfully enriched uranium to make nuclear fuel, officials pledged to move rapidly to industrial-scale work.

Iran warns of end to nuclear diplomacy

Iran warned on Tuesday that the referral of a dispute over its nuclear programme to the United Nations Security Council will bring ”an end to diplomacy”, saying the move had no legal justification. Foreign ministers of the five permanent UN Security Council members agreed in London on Monday to bring Iran before the council over its nuclear programme.

Eight killed in double bomb attack in Iran

Eight people were killed in a double bomb attack on Tuesday in the restive southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz, where a scheduled visit by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had been cancelled at the last minute. The media said a first bomb in Ahvaz exploded in front of a privately-run bank and a second in front of a government office for natural resources.

Iran resumes nuclear research work

Iran on Tuesday reopened nuclear research centres to resume sensitive work after a two-year suspension despite warnings from the West of possible United Nations sanctions. In Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran removed seals at its Natanz atomic research facility.

Iran won’t back down over nuclear programme

Iran will not submit to Western demands to limit its disputed nuclear fuel drive and is prepared to maintain a freeze on sensitive activities only for a few more months, said national security official Ali Larijani. The Islamic republic’s top nuclear negotiator also asserted that Iran was powerful enough to dissuade its critics from considering military action.

Iran nuclear talks risk deadlock

The foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany met the top Iranian negotiator in Geneva on Wednesday in a final bid to stop Iran pressing ahead with plans to resume its uranium-conversion activities. Iranian negotiators warned that the meeting was heading for deadlock amid plans to reopen a nuclear plant in central Iran.

Gunman, depressed over wedding, takes hostages

An Iranian man, depressed about losing his job and his imminent wedding, held a group of young schoolboys hostage at gunpoint for more than two hours on Thursday before being overpowered. Iranian special forces and police surrounded Razi boys’ primary school after the man armed with an AK-47 seized about 25 youngsters and their teachers.

Iran enrichment freeze to be short-lived

Iran said on Monday that its current freeze on uranium enrichment will be short-lived but insisted that its nuclear activities pose no risk to the region, as claimed by arch-enemy the United States. Enrichment is a key process that makes what can be fuel for nuclear reactors but also the explosive core of atomic bombs.
