Seven striking miners were arrested and some were injured during a violent protest at the Impala Platinum (Implats) mine in Rustenburg on Friday, police said. The miners blocked the roads leaving the NR6 and NR8 hostels and threw stones at vehicles, Captain Elsabe Augoustides said.

Bafana Bafana’s first training camp under new coach, Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira, was a success, the coach told reporters at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday. ”It was good. The players were committed and dedicated.” Parreira said everything went according to plan, with the only disturbance being the bustling Johannesburg traffic.

Bafana Bafana players were impressed by their new coach, Brazilian Carlos Parreira, after their first training session at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday morning. ”He looks good to me. He is like the person we needed for a long time,” England-based Blackburn Rovers player Aaron Mokoena told reporters after the training session.

Paramedics on Friday treated a white man who collapsed at a police roadblock after explaining he had changed his name to ”Dlamini” to benefit from black economic empowerment, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Saturday. A spokesperson said traffic officials stopped the man during a roadblock on the N17.

Glenn Agliotti, arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble, who was his business associate, could be joined in the dock by others in a continuing probe into organised crime. Transvaal Judge President Bernard Ngoepe was still angry and bitter about the murder of his granddaughter Makgabo Matlala, he told reporters outside the Vereeniging Circuit Court on Thursday. ”The outcome of this case has confirmed that there is justice in this country,” Ngoepe said. He said the judge imposed a maximum sentence that was suitable.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Thursday called for a total boycott of Shoprite Checkers stores around the country. Legal sparring continued in Jacob Zuma’s corruption trial on Wednesday, with his supporters thinking their side was winning. ”It is clear to anyone inside that court that the ship is sinking,” Congress of South African Trade Unions general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi told the crowd outside the court.
The Little Falls Christian Centre, west of Johannesburg, was awash with tears at Thursday’s memorial for the four police officers killed in a shootout with alleged robbers in Jeppestown. Deputy Minister of Safety and Security Susan Shabangu broke down as she took the podium.
